home again
When I got back from my half year in Japan (1.5 years ago, now) I drafted a monster LiveJournal post detailing everything I thought about there and here. I kept revising it, trying to distill it into core points: like, how different is it, really? and would I consider living there for the rest of my life?

I never quite figured it out, and that post is now lost to wherever my files go when I'm not looking. I expect maybe that's also where my thoughts on Buenos Aires will also go.

In any case, I'm home again after a week's vacation, ready to resume my relatively monotonous and moderate programmer's life.

would you like me to bring back your Frommer's, or would you like to donate it to the K&B visitor's bookshelf?

Do you have to do a meat detox now?

(p.s., I was totally in the Mission today! Of my own volition!! All of the hipsters were riding big wheels elsewhere.)

I just poked through your LJ archives for maybe three whole minutes trying to find that post, and then I decided this post probably meant it isn't there to be found. :(

I didn't know you were in BA! I loved it. I'd love to read your incomplete thoughts if you ever do put them down.

After spending a week and a half in Australia, the distillation I came away with "Americans are fat, probably because we eat too much and drive too much."

That's exactly the feeling I got both times I've come back to the US!

Not sure. I don't really know anybody in Russia (I've found travel is much more fun when there's a local who can help you out).

Welcome back!

I've found that a combination of public posts and the very efficacious Google means that I discover many things that I've forgotten about my travels.

After five years of living in another country and realizing I probably don't plan to go back anytime soon, my basic conclusion is this: The lifestyle I can find in London is better than any I found in 4 major cities in the US.

Are your thoughts anything like Argentina On Two Steaks A Day (http://www.idlewords.com/2006/04/argentina_on_two_steaks_a_day.htm)? (stupid OpenID comment mangling that makes using HTML links uglier than bare URIs)

Buenos Aires: Smoke here is crazy now anyway...

It's probably good you visited BsAs when you did. Even though you were here during the food strike, now, the whole city is engulfed in a cloud of smoke b/c the farmers decided to burn a whole bunch of fields. Visibility is all of about 100 yards or so, and it's not supposed to clear up until next Tuesday.

Crazy stuff...

So probably good you got home when you did.
