Jeff has convinced his band to release half of their new album online, complete with Bittorrent-only downloads for the first week.

This would be small news normally, but his band is already commercially successful and well-known. It's pretty rad they're willing to experiment with alternative distribution approaches.

it is cool, but don't you think it's odd that they're doing the bittorrent mini-release two weeks after the deluxe package is in stores?

I dunno. Why do you think that?

It seems to me like discriminative pricing -- those who can't wait two weeks (or, in general, want the high-quality version) get to pay for the CD; those who can't be bothered to use Bittorrent get to wait an additional week.

I hadn't thought of the discriminative pricing model.

I guess I was thinking of it in terms of an incentive to buy the whole thing. The half posted on the internet gets you really excited about buying the double CD version. I also would have thought that an advantage might be that they'd be ahead of the people who would post it to the internet without the band's permission.

It's the whole album, not just half

Although I guess it how you define "the album" -- from our view, the album is the 10 songs. It's key that it's not perceived as us halving the album and giving that away, but rather that those who buy the physical copy get something extra.

But I suppose that depends if you're a glass-half-full or glass-half-empty kind of guy....

We've been doing a lot of work on distributing content via BitTorrent at ibiblio. You wouldn't happen to have a contact over there for technial stuff, would you? We'd like to talk with them about the problems they're facing, to see if our stuff would help.

Our content distribution system is Osprey (http://osprey.ibiblio.org; links seems less-than-happy about linewrapping my href right now, sorry), which is making its way towards a 1.0 release. All they'll really need is our permaseed application, optimally with the tracker that's been hacked to only advertize that seed when nobody else has a complete copy.

In fact, it's probably the coolest thing going at ibiblio right now.

Sweet, thanks. I'll drop you an email from work in a minute, and LiveJournal need never be mentioned.

Hmm. I recognise the band name but I can't figure out why. What might I know?

It's cool that you and Jeff are so tight you're on a first name basis!
